Red algal bloom delays release of rehabbed sea turtle

The release of a rehabilitated sea turtle by the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island has been delayed out of concern over the algal bloom that has formed near Oregon Inlet.

Barnacle was to be released off Coquina Beach Wednesday but will remain at the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation center on Roanoke Island until the algae dissipates or is confirmed as non-toxic.

Scientists have taken samples of the bloom to try to pinpoint what it contains.

Barnacle recovered after being rescued off the Avalon Pier in June, entangled in a rope attached to a plastic bottle.
