[Spain, EU] The FP7-founded research project AlgaeCom “Exploitation of microalgae diversity for the development of novel high added-value cosmeceuticals” is looking for an experienced researcher (Biologist or Chemist PostDoc-level) to
be recruited as a Marie-Curie-fellow at Fitoplancton Marino, S.L, Spain for 4 months starting in spring 2015.
AlgaeCom seeks to exploit the microalgae biodiversity, as a source for state-of-the-art high-added-value cosmeceuticals. The project will combine both basic and applied research in the fields of -omics technologies, biochemistry and applied biotechnology in order to, a) Develop catalomics, metabolomics and glycomics resources for microalgae diversity as a valuable source of novel high-added-value cosmeceuticals; b) In vitro functional characterize and toxicologically analyze microalgae cosmeceuticals using human epidermal cell lines and in vitro skin model; c) Develop and optimize application-based microalgae culture systems; d) Develop analytical molecular diagnostic tools for real-time monitoring of the microalgae carbohydrate and polysaccharide metabolism in large scale cultures; e) Develop, formulate and in vitro evaluate cosmetic products based on microalgae cosmeceuticals.
In the last years, Fitoplancton Marino, S.L. has established scientific collaborations with several R&D institutions including the Agricultural University of Athens and CNRS, as part of the tasks associated with EU projects. Works developed in this scenario have been focused on the production under different experimental conditions of bioactive compounds with potential interest in cosmeceutics or farmaceutics from several species of microalgae. The results of these collaborative actions joined to the recent advances obtained in microalgal genomics have highlighted the potential advantanges of monitoring the production processes of such bioactives through the transcriptional control of key enzymes that take part in the different metabolic pathways. Thus, Fitoplancton Marino, S.L. has integrated in its structure a new molecular biology laboratory equipped with all the necessary devices to perform these types of studies.
The fellow will collaborate in all the transcriptional analyses of the target genes in the different species as well as in the identification and/or molecular cloning of genes of interest involved in the synthesis of compounds with potential commercial interest. The host organization and its scientific partners have performed prior research in this field and the fellow will build upon this existing knowledge.
The fellow will by employed at Fitoplancton Marino, S.L. as a PostDoc researcher under the regulations of the Spanish social security system and in accordance with the regulations of the Marie Curie Fellowship programme.
