For a long period, Scientists have thought that the increased acidity in the ocean would result in plankton reduction, but a new scientific research shows a completely opposite phenomenon happening right now since last few years. According to the study, Phytoplankton, a floating organism, one of the species of planktons, sees a huge growth in its existence in the North Atlantic ocean.
The rapid growth of the plankton species shocked the scientists, and they are linking this to the rising carbon dioxide in the ocean. Researchers said that the growth has both advantage as well as disadvantage for humans and animals, but they stretched that the disadvantage is more.
The rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean is the reason for the rapid growth of planktons, which may ultimately help serve more food for the animals living in the ocean. But, they have also said that the increase in CO2 could also make living in the ocean harder for many kinds of animals in it. Scientists have also linked the rise of CO2 to the Global Warming.
Meanwhile, there are possibilities that if the carbon dioxide level increases in the ocean, there would be more planktons and more food for living animals in the ocean. And these animals would also expected to emit more oxygen (O2) to the nature, which might help balance the level of CO2 and O2 in the environment. However, WikiPedia says “Phytoplankton (from Greek phyton, or plant), autotrophic, prokaryotic or eukaryotic algae that live near the water surface where there is sufficient light to support photosynthesis.”
Anand Gnanadesikan, associate professor in the Morton K. Blaustein Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins and one of the study’s five authors, said in a statement:
“Something strange is happening here, and it’s happening much more quickly than we thought it should. What is worrisome is that our result points out how little we know about how complex ecosystems function.”
