Algae bloom causes panic in Turkey’s coast

[Turkey] The sudden appearance of the red tied, a common name for a phenomenon known as an algal bloom, in the north western Marmara sea coast off Balıkesir caused panic amongst locals.

A local fisherman said the water turned brown because of the early warming of sea water.

“This happens several times every year”, said Turhan Çavur, a fisherman in the area.

He said the incident was caused due to increase of single-celled algae and added, “But people who didn’t know the reality called local administration.”

“After a certain time the color turns normal,” Çavur said, adding that the incident wasn’t a matter to panic about.
