[Myanmar] Since 1987, commercial Spirulina production from the Twin Taung Lake has been providing its domestic market a range of healthy food, at the same time stimulating the local’s economy growth. However, it is now reported that the natural Spirulina in the lake has almost disappeared due to several reasons.
Expert is now redirecting the water body around the lake to maintain the water quality of the lake. Fishes that are feeding on the algae are also harvested. Apart from conservation of the Spirulina in its natural habitat, experts are also trying to grow the Spirulina in concrete ponds instead of using the lake’s resource.
Natural Spirulina can be found in several crater lakes around the world such as in Mexico, Africa, and Myanmar.
