Devices used to destroy algae at water treatment plant

JOHOR BARU: Syarikat Air Johor Holdings Sdn Bhd has spent about RM1 mil to install five devices that destroy algae at the Sembrong Barat water treatment plant.

Company corporate communications head Jamaluddin Jamil said the devices, installed in the river a month ago, were on a trial run.

“They are effective to a radius of 500m and kill the algae before it reaches the treatment plant,” he said.

“We also released some 50,000 Lampam fish (a species of carp) into the river to eat algae.”

He said that too much algae choked the water filters at the plant and the treatment process had to be stopped each time a backwash was done to clear the blockage.

The plant produces 55 million litres of treated water daily.

Jamaluddin explained that the device, from Holland, was an environmentally friendly solution to control algae growth using ultrasound waves.
