River in Xiamen’s Haicang district turns red due to algae

Recently, the water of a lake in Xiamen’s Haicang district turned red, which stirred a heated discussion in the area, according to reports.

According to research, the color change at the drainage channel was caused by “algal death”, which is the result of the surging temperature in the city. The large quantity of dead algals tinted the water to a reddish colour.

The length of the river that turned red is about 4 kilometers. The municipal Environment Protection Bureau is now testing the water.
