[USA] The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s forecast for harmful algal blooms (HAB) in the western basin of Lake Erie is lower than in previous years.
Research data from March 1 through this week show severe blooms, such as in 2011 and 2013, are not projected in 2015 due to the relatively dry early spring. With dryer weather, less discharge and lower phosphorous loads were dumped into the western basin. However, recent heavy rainfalls have increased the loads, therefore increasing potential bloom severity.
