[Tanzania] Whenever seaweed farmers meet with leaders at constituency and government levels, their complaint is about low price of their product.
They have alleged that the workload is heavy but payment has remained unchanged for too long. However, it has dawned to the minds of the farmers that their concern for a better price cannot be answered positively in the near future because the type of seaweed, Spinosium, they grow fetches less money in the world market.
Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui- Minister for Trade, Industries, and Marketing, responsible for Seaweed business says that it is unfortunate Zanzibaris grow large qualities of Spinosium instead of Cottonii which offers better pay.
“It is unfortunate that the price for the type of seaweed grown mostly in Zanzibar is very low, we have been working with experts to find alternative ways of selling seaweed instead of exporting it as row material,” Mr Mazrui said.
He said some seaweed farmers demand government intervention to make cloves and seaweed prices similar. However, the minister said it is not possible because the two crops have different prices in the world market.
