[USA] Two state lawmakers who asked students to submit suggestions for a “Dumbest Law” contest say they got dozens of entries in an effort to decide which law is most worthy of being repealed.
The winner? A seaweed law. Since 1973, it has been illegal to collect seaweed on the beach at night.
Students at Newport Middle School picked the seaweed law as the state’s dumbest, and it may be repealed in the upcoming legislative session as a result.
The Newport students as well as students from other classes who submitted ideas for laws that should be repealed will be invited to come up to Concord to argue their case.
“We hope to make this an annual event, ” said Max Abramson, a Republican state representative from Seabrook, who along with Rep. John Burt. R-Goffstown, plan to sponsor legislation to repeal the winning entrant.
“Our state is known as the Live Free or Die state, and we want to make sure that no stone is left unturned in search of laws that are no longer appropriate by today’s standards and with today’s technology,” Abramson said in an email.
The offending law in full reads:
207:48 In Night. – If any person shall carry away or collect for the purpose of carrying away any seaweed or rockweed from the seashore below high-water mark, between daylight in the evening and daylight in the morning, he shall be guilty of a violation.
