[UK] Join Innovate UK, the Research Councils and industry leaders who will be providing perspective and discussing opportunities for Microalgae to Aviation Biofuels on Tuesday 24th November at Birmingham Airport.
This is a FREE one-day workshop to bring together the whole supply chain to understand the barriers and opportunities to driving this technology in the UK.
Background and Rationale:
Aviation is one of the fastest growing transport sectors with an expected annual growth of 5% annually up to 2050. European Commission, Airbus and high-level representatives of the aviation and biofuel producers industries launched the European Advanced Biofuels Flightpath. The roadmap aims to deliver 2 million tons of sustainable biofuels by 2020 and this includes from microalgae.
Airbus has identified three milestones towards aviation microalgae fuels considering various technology routes, geography, cultivation options and ecosystem services to determine that HEFA and HTL conversion technologies are the most economically viable option to create a compatible jet fuel.
The Sustainable Aviation’s Sustainable Fuels UK Road-Map describes various technologies and whilst HEFA is an approved aviation biofuel, HEFA derived from microalgae is not expected to reach commercial reality until 2030. The objective of this workshop is to bring together key stakeholders from cultivators to fuel suppliers to realise the challenges and begin to develop strategies to ensure microalgae based aviation fuel is a shorter-term reality.
