[Fiji] A large number of seaweed projects along the Bua and Cakaudrove coast have been totally destroyed due to TC Winston. While they are yet to release the actual figures, Principal Fisheries Officer North Joti Vuakaca says these farmers will now have to start from scratch again.
As part of their rehabilitation program, the Fisheries Department is replanting seaweed at their four cluster farms in Vanua Levu, which will then be distributed to the affected seaweed farmers when they are ready.
Vuakaca says it will take about six weeks for these new crop of seaweed to be ready and distributed. Seaweed from the four clusters farms will also be distributed to Viti Levu as well as Yasawa.
Meanwhile, the total cost of damage in the fisheries sector in the North currently stands at close to $500,000. Assessments are still being conducted in some places.
