New biotechnology process for algae fibres

[Germany] Researchers at the Hohenstein Institute have established a new biotechnological process to produce a soil-derived bacterial biopolymer for use in fibre-based medical products such as wound dressings.

The bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii has been used as a natural alginate resource, meaning that the conventional, time-consuming process of obtaining biopolymers from brown algae can be replaced by a more sustainable biotechnological process.
