Modi tells SHGs, fishermen to explore seaweed farming

[India] ‘It has major pharmaceutical application and nutrient value, and will fetch good income for women and fishermen’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Sunday that fishermen and self-help groups (SHGs) along the coast can opt for seaweed farming that has major pharmaceutical application and nutrient value. It has the potential to transform the way of farming, he said.

Addressing a rally of members of SHGs promoted by Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project at Ratnavarma Heggade stadium, he said that in seaweed farming crops will be ready in 45 days.

Fishermen along the coast do not get much work during rainy season and hence he suggested “seaweed ki kheti”.

The Prime Minister told D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, to examine his proposal by consulting scientists. “I have an idea as a layman, but cannot implement it through the government owing to various rules,” he told Mr. Heggade.

Mr. Modi said seeweed, which are full of water, can be used as input in farming to fight drought. Cultivating them would fetch income for women and fishermen.

Speaking after launching the ‘preserve mother earth and transfer to the next generation campaign’ by SDM group of institutions on the occasion, he said that uncontrolled exploitation of the Earth by pouring chemicals and fertilizers has deteriorated soil condition.

He urged farmers in the country to reduce the use of urea by 50% by 2022 when the country celebrates its 75th year of Independence. Farmers could save considerably and the Earth too would give bountiful, he said. Similarly, every farmer should go for micro irrigation considering the water scarcity looming large over the country, he said. Mr. Modi said the giver cannot go on giving and the receiver go on receiving, which results in imbalance. The environment is a gift from the forefathers and the present generation is duty bound to pass it on to the next generation.

He said that human kind never bothered about over-exploiting mother nature, but only bothered about immediate financial gain. Calling the campaign a major environment initiative, he said it needed to address issues of global warming.
